Institution of Civil Engineers - Chairman of the ICE panel for historical engineering works.

Awarded his knighthood in the Millennium New Years Honours.

After a short illness he died in hospital in London on 9th August.

2002
Memorial Conference - 29 to 31 March
to celebrate his life by reviewing his contributions to and recent advances in geotechnical engineering. The Skempton building was dedicated during the Conference.
