Alec Westley Skempton was born on 4th June, Northampton. He attended Northampton Grammar School
1932
He studied civil engineering at Imperial College (City & Guilds College).
1936
He joined the Building Research Station.
 
1937
Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Building Research Station..
 
1945
Established Soil Mechanics Course at Imperial College
 


1947
Founding member of the ICE Soil Mechanics & Foundations Committee
 
1950
First postgraduate course in Soil Mechanics, Imperial College
 

1955
Appointed Chair of Soil Mechanics, Imperial College.
Gave his inaugural lecture on 8th November entitled "Soil Mechanics and its Place in the University".

 
1957
Head of Department of Civil Engineering (until 1976), Imperial College.
Elected President of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering.
