Introduction
The Skempton and Bishop databases are
fully searchable and can generate their own web pages,
thereby making an accessible front end of the catalogues for users.
This website includes access to the Skempton and Bishop catalogues,
information on Skempton and Bishop and some images from their archives.
It is also linked to other resources from some of their international
contemporaries and colleagues.
Professor Sir
Alec Skempton
was a prolific researcher, which resulted in
his leaving a large mass of papers, maps, books and photographic
material, both at his home and in his office at Imperial College.
The archive is therefore made up of these materials. The task of
bringing this together, ordering it in such a way that would be
recognizable to Skempton himself and to future researchers has also
been huge!
The archival order must reflect the man and his important work for the
profession and teaching of civil engineering. His place in the founding
of the science of soil mechanics must be drawn out, as well as his
essential collaborations with colleagues at Imperial and elsewhere,
including, importantly, Karl Terzaghi.
