Links with Industry

Links between industry and the research school:

Support in the form of sponsorship and the provision of materials is received for much of the research undertaken. Industry is kept informed of the work of the school by an Industrial Forum, which meets at appropiate intervals and is open to sponsors and interested members from industry. Close contact is maintained with industry by both the MSc course and the research school.

Links between industry and the MSc Course:

An Industrial Steering Committee exists to advise on the management and content of the courses so as to ensure that the course continues to provide the education and training that industry perceives as being necessary for the future. The Steering Committee consists entirely of managers from industry and is chaired by the MSc course co ordinator. The committee meets annually.

Industry provides invited lecturers to teach particular courses where the practices, attitudes and legislation currently operating in industry are relevant. These courses total just under 20% of the course as a whole.

An important part of the course is the Professional Practice provided to students: here real problems are taken from company files, studied by the students, who present their findings and recommendations (viva - voce) to the engineer from whose files the problem came. This is an interactive course with managers from industry.

Industry is also able to collaborate with the independent work of students completing their dissertation, and approximately 30% to 50% of the dissertations completed have some industrial attachment.

Many of the permanent staff involved with teaching the MSc play an active role in advising industry at home and overseas, both onshore and offshore.
