A Brief History of the College

Imperial College was created in 1907 by the incorporation of three existing South Kensington colleges of earlier date: the City & Guilds College, the Royal School of Mines and the Royal College of Science. A fourth constituent college, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, was added in 1988, and the Medical School is currently in the middle of a major expansion, involving the centralisation of all pre-clinical medical education in the West London area on the South Kensington Campus.

The City & Guilds College is made up of the five Engineering Departments (Civil and Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical and Aeronautics), the Department of Computing and The Management School. Its graduates add the letters ACGI (Associate of the City & Guilds of London Institute) to their qualifications on successful completion of the course.

The guiding principle of the Union is that it is run by students, for students. The student officers who run the Union are elected by the student body and their job is to represent you at all levels of the Union. Most of these positions are part-time and include faculty representatives, campus officers and club society officers.

There are also four sabbatical officers who take time out from their studies and dedicated a year to running the Union full-time. These are the President, who is the figurehead of the Union and responsible for its overall running; and three deputy presidents, who all have responsibility for specific areas of the Union. They are: Deputy President (Finance & Services), Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) and Deputy President (Education & Welfare). Sabbatical officers are elected every year in a cross-campus ballot in which all full members of the Union are entitled to vote.
